Samsung SC-MX20 Flash-based Compact CamCorder Delivers Features at Comfortable Price Point#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

I just had someone email about a suggestion for a cheap video camera that was easy to use and had no tapes or DVDs. I remember at CES 2008 there were a few affordable camcorders out there and was compiling a list when I got a press release this morning from Samsung Electronics America, Inc. on their SC-MX20, the successor to the popular SC-MX10 compact digital camcorder, that a few friends have and love. This camcorder is targeting consumers looking for an easy way of uploading video content to the Internet, the SC-MX20 features a customized recording mode optimized for YouTube™ or multi-media devices, further simplifying the way users integrate the camcorder into their digital lifestyles.

Samsung SC-MX20 Camcorder 2

The Samsung SC-MX20 Camcorder features a high-performance 680K pixel CCD sensor which delivers a resolution of 720x480, the Samsung SC-MX20 captures video with stunning color and clarity. The new model features a powerful Schneider lens with 34x optical zoom and advanced noise reduction (3-D Noise Reduction) technology to provide superb video quality. It also features Samsung’s improved Advanced Image Stabilization, assuring that consumers will be able to record blur-free memories both near and far, as well as Face Detection, which can automatically detect up to five faces and adjust focus to ensure better composition.

The SC‑MX20 features a slot for SD/SDHC (up to 32GB) and MMC+ memory cards and utilizes H.264 compression for longer record times and enhanced video quality. Samsung’s H.264 technology more than doubles the compression ratio so that it takes less time to send video files via email or upload them onto the Internet.

Thanks to H.264 compression, when in full resolution and when set to fine mode, users can record up to four hours of footage using an 8GB memory card, eight hours using a 16GB memory card, and up to 16 hours using a 32GB memory card. Furthermore, the SC-MX20 features the longest battery life in its class, lasting up to three hours.

For added convenience, and to enhance the consumer’s experience when shooting video, the new SC-MX20 features Samsung’s exclusive swivel hand-grip which effortlessly adjusts for regular and low angle shooting.  The camcorder features a large 2.7 inch LCD to help users frame their subjects and review footage even in sunlight.

“The SC-MX20 is a camcorder that offers a host of advanced features at an impressive price point,” said Tony Sorice, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Digital Imaging at Samsung Electronics America. “Sharing many of the same advanced features as our higher-end digital camcorders, including the head-turning design of the SC-HMX20C, the SC-MX20 is sure to stand out from the crowd of ‘me-too’ camcorders.”

The SC-MX20 features a unique shooting mode that allows users to select a resolution and format that are perfect for uploading content to YouTube™ or multi-media devices. By selecting the Web & Mobile mode, the camcorder’s resolution is automatically adjusted to 640x480 (H.264 / AAC / MP4) and optimized for use on Web sites. Unlike other camcorders, users can easily import video from the SC-MX20 and play it on MP3 players and other portable multimedia players supporting H.264, without having to convert the files. The SC-MX20 also comes bundled with CyberLink software for the additional editing and customization of video files.

The SC-MX20 features Samsung’s useful iCheck and iScene modes. iCheck allows the user to effortlessly check remaining battery life and memory capacity with the touch of a button, while iScene allows the user to select up to 10 automatic scene modes for capturing the best footage no matter what environment they may be in.

Appealing to a variety of consumers, the SC-MX20 will be available in four colors, including black, red, white, and blue, all with silver trim. The SC-MX20 will be available in August 2008 with an estimated selling price of $279.99 a very affordable price point.

It is one of the most affordable cameras out there with a great lens set at CES, I remember Eric stating this would make a cheap backup camera or a great camera for his son.Granted he was also eyeing their sub-$1000 HD camera that handles H264 mpeg-4 files as well. :)

VITO Technology updates FunContact to version 2.15#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

VITO Technology releases a new version of FunContact - the contact manager that provides an exciting and convenient contact management on Windows Mobile touch screen devices (yeah its similar to the kinetic experience you get on some other devices that begin with the letter 'i'. You can do everything with a quick flick of a finger!

vito contact blk vito contact blk2

FunContact 2.15 presents two major new features: a new black skin like in the recently released in both ZoomBoard and SMS-Chat, and also joystick support. The black skin fits perfectly brand-new Windows Mobile devices hitting the market like HTC Diamond, TyTN II, Touch Pro and all other devices from Touch series as they all have dim color theme.

vito contact 2
The original "fun" skin is still available and allows even serious businessmen to take their ease on vacation and relax.  Also joystick support has been added due to the huge outcry from Vito's customers since FunContact was released. New FunContact gives you the choice: you can scroll the list with a finger or with a joystick. Both variants are very convenient, and though the main idea of FunContact is to manage contacts with finger, some FunContact users addicted to joystick now can also benefit by performing all the basic operations in FunContact like calling, texting ,etc. with joystick.

FunContact is available for $19.95 at  http://iwindowsmobile.com/contact-manager.html. FunContact also supports English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Danish, Portuguese, Greek, Polish, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.

Astraware Announces Free Fireworks#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

The folks at Astraware are pleased to announce their fun application Astraware Fireworks is now available again for a limited time. Astraware Fireworks is a simple FREE application, showing sequences of fireworks flying and exploding into the air. As 4th July is traditionally a time for fireworks and celebrations in the USA, the features have been created to help our American friends highlight one of their major holidays - Independence Day! Astraware Fireworks features a selection of patriotic backgrounds including the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore and the Stars and Stripes, and offers a choice of stirring tunes including the Star Spangled Banner and Stars and Stripes Forever!

Astraware fireworks

Astraware Fireworks is available for devices running Palm OS(R) 5 and later and Windows Mobile(R) 2003 and later, and this year a new BlackBerry(R) version is available which includes the backgrounds and firework effects but doesn't include music, so sorry BlackBerry-owners - this time round you'll have to hum your own marches!

What better way to celebrate 4th July than with some Fireworks? Download your copy today at http://www.astraware.com/fireworks - it's available for a limited time only! Oh, and did we mention, it's FREE?! We all like FREE.

Also if you are a Club Astraware member (if you aren't a member you can register for free!) you can get Big Box of Blox (here is your favorite price again) absolutely FREE throughout July '08 on S60, Windows Mobile and Palm OS phones, and it's still a very reasonable $9.95 for non-members.  If you aren't familiar with Big Box of Blox it is a blox-stacking game taken to outrageous extremes! Players arrange the three-blox-high stacks as they fall. Match blox in groups of three or more, vertically or horizontally, to eliminate them - but that's not all!

The cool thing about this game is that you just don't stack the blox. Smash them, blast them, mutate them or explode them in a shower of flames! Use special blox including jokers, bombs, frogs, mushrooms, fireballs and slot machines to clear the board before it reaches the top!

Big Box of Blox includes five mind-bending game modes: Flaming Peelout, Blok Atak, Groink, Mushroom King and Asylum Cubez, and players can even create their own combination using the special Custom Mode.

Enjoy the 4th of July thanks to the folks at Astraware!

Dash Express becomes the first GPS to Update over WiFi#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

I had beta tested the Dash Express (my family was sad to see it go) and was impressed with the ability use both the internal GPRS radio and WiFi radio to download content, locations, current gas prices, and perform real time Yahoo searches as well as upload current traffic information. During the beta some updates were offered over WiFi and it is nice to see that Dash finally brought that to the final product and became the first GPS provider to wirelessly update its device software over-the-air. This software update will include several new product features that will further enhance the everyday commuter experience and the cool thing is that it doesn't require users to separately purchase and install upgrades via a PC or DVD download.

dash express

• The June08 Update adds several new features designed to answer customers’ everyday commuting questions such as “Is my route the best option today?” or “Where is the closest coffee shop along my route?”  The MyRoute™ and Search Along Route™ product enhancements make the Dash Express even more relevant for everyday commuting.

• The June08 Update also includes a new GPS fix feature called FasterFind™ which dramatically decreases the time it takes for the Dash Express to find its position and start navigating.

• Subscribers of the Dash service receive ongoing software updates throughout the year including historical traffic information from the Dash Driver Network, new features, software improvements and updated maps.

• The June08 Update includes the following new features and enhancements:

dash myroute

· MyRoute – Maps and traditional GPS devices are great navigation tools, but they will never replace local street smarts. Drivers often know the best shortcuts to and from the places that they frequent, but what they really want to know is whether their route is the smartest route today based on current traffic data. Dash is the only GPS that learns routes automatically based on user behavior. With Dash’s new MyRoute feature, as drivers travel from one point to another, the device automatically learns their preferred route. The next time that they drive between the same origin and destination, the first route choice will be a MyRoute, complete with traffic-based arrival time data. Drivers can compare their MyRoute to the computed Dash routes, including traffic detours, and decide which one is optimal.

dash searchalongroute

· Search Along Route – Finding whatever drivers need on the road using Yahoo! Local search just got even easier. With the new Search Along Route feature, Dash drivers can now search for virtually anything they need along their selected route, shortening diversions on the way to their destination. Want to grab a latte on the way to a meeting? Simply do a Yahoo! Local search for “Starbucks” and select “along route” to be presented with the stores that are most conveniently located. Results are displayed with the distance from the current location, the distance from the route and the direction of the destination relative to the selected route.

· FasterFind – With FasterFind powered by SiRFInstantFix technology, Dash Express uses additional over-the-air GPS satellite position information to get a fast GPS fix so Dash drivers can be underway in seconds. Since the Dash Express is connected, the FasterFind file is automatically and wirelessly downloaded at regular intervals providing users with the most accurate GPS satellite position information available. There is no need to connect to a PC or wait to get a GPS fix. FasterFind not only helps drivers get a quick start every time the device is turned on, it also enables a fast GPS fix under difficult conditions such as beneath tree cover and near high-rise buildings.

· Performance Enhancements – Continued system upgrades have enabled significant progress in overall device performance. For instance, the June08 Update increases the speed in which Dash Express draws its maps by more than 50%. It also enables quicker toggling between 2D and 3D map views and smoother map zooming.

· User Interface Improvements – The June08 Update also includes numerous user-requested refinements to the Dash Express interface, making it even more intuitive for daily use. These improvements include tuning the route selection screen to make it easier to select among the multiple route choices, improving the readability of road labels on the map and expanding the night mode color scheme across more menus for glare reduction.

· In conjunction with the first of its kind software update, Dash announced that the Dash Developer Program, launched in May, is off to a great start with over 30 partner and user-created DashApps* that enable consumers to access a wide range of personalized content in their cars – weather, garage sales, real estate listings, speed traps, Twitter – and more!

The company's newest partner, EveryBlock, collects and publishes neighborhood and block-level news in cities including Chicago, New York and San Francisco. With the EveryBlock DashApp, launched today, drivers in those cities can access a "neighborhood feed," including public records (e.g., crimes, restaurant inspections, building permits), and user-contributed knowledge (e.g., local photos posted to Flickr) -- all filtered geographically according to the vehicle's current location.

· “Unlike existing GPS devices, the Internet-connected Dash Express, is the first system designed to keep learning and getting smarter over time,” said Paul Lego, CEO of Dash Navigation. “Today’s software update is just the beginning. We’re interacting with our customers on a daily basis, gathering their input and incorporating it into the product. With our newest features, we’re able to help our customers quickly get the answers they need during their daily commutes.”

For more information head to Dash.net about the software update.

8th Annual Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Awards 2008 Nominations#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

Well its that time of year again. Nominations are open for the 8th Annual Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Awards 2008. So if you have some favorite software you would like to nominate for the award please do so by July 21, 2008.

sppcmag awards

How are the 2008 winners determined?

There have been over 15,000 games, utilities, and applications written for Windows Mobile Smartphones and PDAs. To be considered for the Best Software Awards, developers need to enter their product description in the Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories (free listing). Roughly 20% of the 4000 software products in the Encyclopedia are nominated by the Board of Experts. These experts vote in over 180 Smartphone and Pocket PC categories to determine finalists and winners.

All expert judges are prominent Web Site associates, Microsoft MVPs, support forum contributors, and Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine contributors. These experts are all volunteers and none are employed for the purpose of judging by Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine.

How do products become nominated in 2008?

The 2008 Best Software Awards Nominations Manager,  Werner (Menneisyys) Ruotsalainen and our Board of Expert judges select the 2008 award nominees in May and June 2008 from the Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories. Vendors must make sure their free Encyclopedia listings are entered and up to date by using the submission form.

Werner Ruotsalainen initially selects nominations based on his extensive knowledge of Windows Mobile software. In most cases these nominations include winners and finalists from last year's contest. The 2008 Board of Experts judges are then asked to examine Werner’s initial nominations list for validity and to suggest additions and category changes.

Judges, the public, and software vendors can use the nominations form to nominate products for the 2008 awards. Werner and the Smartphone & Pocket PC staff make the final judgment on nominations, giving the most weight to judges’ suggestions.

A great deal of quality time and attention is put into the nominations process. Even so, with so much Windows Mobile software available, it is certainly possible that some excellent products are missed.

In order to minimize the chances of missing great products, the working list of nominees are made public for a 2-3 week period currently scheduled June 25-July 16.

The 2008 nominations are frozen on July 21, 2008. Products and versions released by July 21, 2008 are eligible for the voting. It is possible that newer versions of products released during the judging period are considered by some judges. However, this anomaly is a function of the logistics of the process and not from vendor request.

So if you have some favorite software you feel deserving of an award please nominate them so they can get the recognition they deserve.
