HTC Touch Pro Announced#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

HTC announced its latest handset at formerly known as the HTC Raphael, will now be known as the HTC Touch Pro.

htc touch pro

HTC Corp., a global leader in mobile phone innovation and design, today unveiled its advanced next generation business phone, the HTC Touch Pro™. Bringing a beautiful new angle to mobile business productivity, the HTC Touch Pro utilizes similar styling and functionality of the highly anticipated Touch Diamond™ and introduces a variety of business-focused enhancements that make getting work done on the go quick and easy.

The rest of the Press release is here. HTC also announced some accessories for both the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro with similarly designed desktop cradles,a travel charger accessory pack, an extended battery and slim collapsible case for the Touch Diamond.

HTC Touch Pro front and side HTC Touch Pro with 5 row keyboard out

Compared to the HTC Touch Diamond, which is available this week online for the price of $795.95 (Check some great videos of it on YouTube), Touch Pro is basically the same device with a 5 row keyboard which only adds 6.77mm about 60% thickness. The Touch Pro also has a larger battery (1350mAh vs. 900mAh), but it also has less storage space due to the fact that the Touch Pro adds a microSD slot for expansion, which is more aligned for Power Users and people like myself, who like the ability for expandability.  Another interesting thing that is added is the HTC Ext USB that is 11-pin miniUSB 2.0 port, audio jack and TV out so you can display your PowerPoint presentations on the big screen. I don't know if the Touch Pro has the same magnet in the stylus like the Touch Diamond, that turns the device on when removed, but one can only assume it does. It looks like HTC is covering all their bases and has another nice looking device on their hands and looks to be the sole competitor to the Sony Xperia for my next device.

Also before you ask, HTC won’t be releasing this in the US yet due to the lack of the 850 band support, but I am sure many will still order one via online retailers according to HTC in late 2008. Hopefully retail outlets like BestBuy will also make these available in the US for easy purchasing of nice unlocked phones.

T-Mobile offers Unlimited Family Plan#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

While I was on the T-mobile website this week re-adding my wife's data plan (she tried it, didn't think she needed it, went through data withdrawal, and now has it back) I was looking at the plans with maybe the chance of upgrading our minute plan since we are using our cell phones more and noticed that you can now get a Family Time Unlimited plan for 2 people for $149 with each addition user for $49.

tmobile family time unlimited

Here is the text if you can't read it from the picture:

T-Mobile now offers families an Unlimted Nationwide Calling & Messaging Plan. This plan lets you connect the way you want to, without worrying about minutes or unpredictable bills. You get unlimited nationwide calling and text, IM, picture and video messaging to anyone on any network, even landlines for just $149.98 per month for two lines. Up to three additional lines are just $49.99 each.

If data was included it would have been even sweeter, but its still a very great plan for families or two users that share minutes and go over their monthly allotment.

Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

Looking to make strides in the public sector and SMB markets AMD launched a new laptop platform called Puma targeting users that want to take their HD content with them wherever they are. Utilizing both the AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile(Griffin) processor and AMD M780G with the ATI Radeon HD 3000 graphics chip the new platform promises to deliver a “Full HD Experience”. With Intel's delay of its new Centrino 2 Laptop system, this could be a golden opportunity for AMD during the back-to-school purchase season.

There are several new notebook designs based on Puma coming from leading OEMs including Acer, Asus, Clevo, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, HP, MSI, NEC and Toshiba.

The AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile processor includes top enhancements including AMD Independent Dynamic Core Technology, a new mobile-optimized memory controller, and power-optimized HyperTransport™ 3.0. When using notebooks with both integrated and discrete graphics, users can also benefit from ATI CrossFireX™ Technology, a feature of ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology designed to boost graphics performance up to 70 percent by running the integrated and discrete graphics together.

“Windows Vista enhances the overall performance and productivity of the personal computer, offers rich visual experiences and makes the digital lifestyle easier, safer, more entertaining and better connected than ever before,” said Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president of the OEM division at Microsoft. “The next-generation AMD notebook platform provides optimized technologies that will provide an even richer visual experience for customers running Windows Vista and other graphically demanding applications.”

Our good friend Arne Hess over at the::unwired posted up an article about Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile, something that many people have been waiting for when Windows Vista was released (recently mentioned an update to it here). Well its still not ready for the mass-market yet, Microsoft’s Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile Developer Preview v0.01 is an application for both Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6 Profesional/Classic/Pocket PCs and Smartphones/Standard devices that allows you to use your Windows Mobile device as a Bluetooth SideShow-compatible device. Basically using a Windows Gallery Gadget that runs on your computer as another window or remote control that allows for two-way communication between your computer and the information on your Windows Mobile device. If you do happen to fall out of the 30m range or if you shut off/sleep/hibernate your computer you can still view the content sent to the phone previously.

Zune Games Q&A#
Post By Steve "fyiguy" Hughes

 games on zune

OK to answer some of the deluge of questions I have received about Zune Games after putting up this how to on Getting Games on Your Zune, I will answer the top questions I have received:

How long does it take to do this?

Well it depends - it depends on your Internet connection and if you have UAC enabled, have more than one Zune, have trouble finding and downloading games, etc. To better gauge the time, my 10-year-old daughter did the step-by-step how-to in about 8.5 minutes after seeing the games on my Zune (yeah, I timed her) and was playing games and using applications. Her favorites are the Calculator,Zune Clock, Scrambled Albums, zJewels and XnaTetris. She wants to make her own games and an ebook reader for the scripts of her plays, but thinks its way too hard. She may do it for a summer project.

What are the games in the pictures?
The games are Galactic Wars 3 aka GW3 on the 30GB Zune and Rock Rain SD on the Flash Zune. You can get them both from the links provided in the original post as well as the direct links provided. I think I got them all from Zuneboards. There is a collection of games for the Zune in a Zune Games Package available here.

Is there a web browser for Zune?
Not at this time - due to the fact that the Zune doesn't currently support web/Internet HTTP hooks required for a web browser. It would be nice if one could sync to the Zune Marketplace directly or surf the Internet, but currently its not available. Also from what I have been told that the WiFi currently only supports Ad-Hoc WiFi connections: Zune to Zune, Zune to PC, etc. There easily could be the possibility of an application supporting an Instant messaging or chat client with a selectable keyboard, preset messages, and maybe someone will create one. I

Will this tutorial ever work on 64-bit machines?

Yes the final CTP will support 64-bit systems. Current workaround is to use a Virtual 32-bit image and install the necessary software.

What are the controls on the Zune?

OK the controls are pretty intuitive, but all games and applications should have a help file with it. Control varies from game to game, application to application, but most are modeled after the Xbox 360 controller since it is using similar code.

Most use the DPad up/down/left/right to navigate menus and control the game. If you have a ZunePad/TouchPad/Squircle it will map to a thumbstick on the XBOX360 controller. :)

The Play/Pause button acts like the A button on an Xbox controller.

To select a menu item, the Center button is used. In a game the Center Button is like the B button on a controller

The back button is like the back button on a controller and exits the game/pauses it/brings up an options menu depending on how the game or application is written.

Why does the Zune shut down after I exit a game and reboot?

This done "by design" to clear available memory from run away threads still running in the background(the kernel is based on WinCE/PMC OS) as well as for DRM and music protection, which are disabled when an application or game starts to allow access to it. There is a way to do this in the game itself and return the the main menu, but I don't know if all games and applications implement this so I think to be safe than sorry, they went with a "soft reset".Maybe this will change in the future.

Can I beam/send/squirt games from one Zune to another?

Currently I don't see a way to do this, but maybe in the future, plus if developers want to be paid for their hard work this would defeat it unless they want it to be available for free.

Can Zune applications and games support Visualizations and Music?

Yes, if the game or application is designed to do so. One of the cool things is the ability to bring up album art and music that resides on the Zune and use them in games and applications.

Can the Zune run Windows Live Gadgets or be used as a Vista Sideshow device?

It is possible via MTP and Sync Center, but I haven't seen any official documentation or announcement on how to do this yet  since  the Zune doesn't support MTP. It would make sense and add value to the device, like sharing Xbox Live content would, but probably has been placed on the back burner. I have seen some preliminary device mockups and some units from Toshiba looked strikingly similar to those of the Zune. Robert McLaws posted it about it a while back here. Note if you checked your Windows Vista Update there was a new SideShow universal driver update, I found it mentioned on the Sideshow team blog in a post here, after my Control Panel popped up and I just happened to notice the Windows Sideshow Icon and wondered why it popped up.

How do I delete games from my Zune?

OK head to the Main Menu (hold down back button) -> Games ->Select the game you want to delete from the list->select "- delete" -> Confirm "delete game and all saved content by moving the Directional pad to the left and selecting yes and select. The game will be removed from your device. Now only if they would allow the same thing for pictures, videos, music, and podcasts. :)

When can I buy Games for my Zune?

Good question. Nothing has been officially announced, yet. However there are alot of games people would love to see on the Zune like Hexic, Zuma, Snails, Pacman, Defender, Frogger, and other games for Windows Mobile and Xbox Live Arcade that would port over rather nicely. The only games that are available now are free so try them out. :)

Where can I get more games for my Zune?

Besides the links I mentioned before you can also find some games over at GameProjects.

Hope this answers most of your questions.
